Commissioning Art in the Public Realm

commissioning art in the public realm

The role of art in the public domain has grown significantly in recent years with an ever-increasing range of applications and diversity of artforms. Established practice of permanent public art such as physical works of sculptures, mosaics and murals now encompasses temporary artworks such as pop-up installations, activations and mapped digital projections – art in the public realm. This can be a singular piece, a collection or a programme, either existing work which is curated or new and specifically commissioned.

Whether it is integrated public art, temporary presentations or one-off events, producing the best work for the site, context or location has a variety of challenges. Objectives can include placemaking, community cohesion or tourism, requiring responses to site and spirit of place, cultural celebrations or traditions, or be unique or bespoke.
Commissioning Art in the Public Realm starts with a carefully considered brief, recruitment and selection of suitable creatives, involves concept development, contractor management and budget monitoring, and comes to completion with installation, presentation or delivery of the chosen works. This process can seem daunting, and no two commissions are ever the same.

culturescape has experience of commissioning a wide range of artforms for a variety of contexts and situations.
